Super Meat Boy Forever, the auto-running platformer sequel from developer and publisher Team Meat, will officially roll out on mobile devices on April 20th, 2023. It will be available on both iOS and Android. You can watch the new mobile release date trailer on publisher Thunderful Games’ official YouTube channel here:
Super Meat Boy has widely been considered a platforming classic. Its world and the characters that populate it are relentlessly bizarre, the mechanics are fun to master, and the music tied everything together into a perfect little fever dream.
The game set high expectations for the sequel, which also took a decade to release. Following the lengthy wait, Super Meat Boy Forever was ultimately a very divisive game, mainly for its central auto-running mechanic.
The addition was probably meant to create a greater sense of urgency, speed, and chaos. Sadly, it mostly just compromises all of the thrilling mechanics that made the original so tricky and unique. Setting that aside, many of the complaints about Super Meat Boy Forever also involve technical flaws, such as muddled controls.
A mobile release has a lot of pressure to improve some of these issues. Playing the game on mobile could actually benefit the auto-running factor that disappointed so many. That’s because it’s simply harder to manage controls on mobile devices, and less freedom would be helpful.
However, there’s a serious risk that any mobile port could carry over all of the same technical problems too. If the port can smooth things over, it could be a more satisfying experience compared to Super Meat Boy Forever‘s original launch.
Fortunately, Thunderful Games has been a reliable publisher, and is also bringing Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine to PC and consoles sometime this year.
