Universal Studios Hollywood has surprised fans today by announcing that Japan’s hit Mario attraction Super Nintendo World is coming to Southern California on February 17th, 2023. Alongside the reveal, there’s a new trailer that teases some of the gorgeous new areas that visitors can expect:

Despite some controversy over Mario’s voice, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has gradually won over fans of the classic video game series with each new trailer. It hints at a better degree of wit and self-awareness than usual for Illumination, an animation studio that has drawn serious division for its parade of Minion movies and adaptation of The Grinch.

Mario and countless other familiar faces from the games are hitting the big screen again, and Super Nintendo World already proved itself highly successful in the East. So, it’s the perfect time for Universal Studios Hollywood to add the area itself.

The attractions in the trailer look absolutely stunning, and it will definitely add some sorely needed personality to the theme park. Many key attractions have been lost over the years, and some of the additions have relied heavily on gimmicks or screens that don’t have the same tactile feeling.

Perhaps the most successful commitment was The Wizarding World, which definitely transports visitors with some solid recreations. There are also great activities, and that level of interaction is key for a great theme park. After all, rides always take ages to enjoy.

Given the trailer for Super Nintendo World, it looks like Universal Studios Hollywood has seriously invested in bringing a detailed video game setting to life, and certainly has as much potential as Japan. There are also plenty of examples of special activities, events, and merchandise. However, it remains unclear just how much Universal Studios Hollywood will borrow from the original Japanese area.
