Horror Stories: Harvest Hunt, an upcoming roguelite and single-player survival horror game from developer and publisher Villainous Games Studio, has just been revealed with a new announcement trailer. Also, a playable demo has been set for Steam Next Fest on June 19th, 2023.
Horror Stories: Harvest Hunt doesn’t have a release date yet. But it will be available on Steam, where it hints the game is “coming soon”. You can wishlist the game on Steam today, and catch today’s announcement trailer on the Villainous Games Studio YouTube channel:
Villainous Games Studio, indie devs based in London, recently rebranded from CMD:Studio and have already released Horror Stories: PLEASE COMPLY. So, today’s newly revealed game is actually part of an anthology series, which already plans on adding another installment, the murder mystery Horror Stories: Welcome Home.
Horror Stories: PLEASE COMPLY was much smaller in scale, with a considerably short runtime and certainly less content. It didn’t have much gameplay, so Harvest Hunt is going to break a lot of new ground for them.
It’s really two games in one. The roguelite deckbuilding and 3D horror survival mechanics influence each other, but they are left fully disparate, as opposed to games like the card-based shooter Friends vs Friends, which we recently reviewed.
The deckbuilding and survival even have equally separate art designs, although both are fairly neat. There is a blend of cartoonish, cel shaded influences and a sense of ancient wonder.
It conjures up simple Halloween themes with its traditional rustic village, but still musters some interesting atmosphere. The tools all have a weathered look, and the enemy designs are fine, but the real highlights are the lighting and sound effects. These are finely tuned and more immersive than expected.
