Tails: The Backbone Preludes is an upcoming dystopian noir from developer Eggnut and publisher Raw Fury. A new release date trailer has revealed that Tails: The Backbone Preludes will launch soon on February 2nd, 2023. It’ll be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Here’s the full release date trailer from publisher Raw Fury:
Tails: The Backbone Preludes may be an amusing title, but the devs took their noir genre quite seriously. Anthropomorphic animals are often the base for either silly humor or the uncanny, and Eggnut has opted for the latter.
Today’s trailer may not have shown much, but the imagery, music and tone are suitably grim. The game’s Steam page also reinforces that Tails: The Backbone Preludes will emphasize universal themes and “formative moments”.
The art design is gorgeous, vibrant and full without sacrificing the bleakness that noir demands. And of course, music plays a large role in that genre, and the soundtrack certainly promises to be something special.
Tails: The Backbone Preludes looks like a more polished and distinguishable follow up to Backbone, which received some mixed reviews when it launched back in 2021. Most complaints concerned the narrative, in spite of unanimous praise for the visuals.
Tails: The Backbone Preludes offers more narrative freedom, perhaps in response, though it would certainly improve the replay value either way. Set “years before” Backbone, players will have the opportunity to make impactful decisions to find various outcomes. Notably, it was often the latter half of Backbone’s narrative that frustrated fans of the game.
As a result, Tails: The Backbone Preludes has the potential to retain the strengths of its predecessor and finally deliver the experience some disappointed fans have hoped for. But it’s clear that Eggnut has a bright future, and they developed this prequel with surprising speed, so hopefully we’ll see a new series from them soon.
