Tales of Symphonia, the classic action RPG that originally launched on the GameCube back in 2003, has just announced that a remaster will release on February 17th, 2023. The game can be pre-ordered now, and there will be special “Chosen” editions. The remaster will be available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Although the game was a fan favorite, you can still review today’s new trailer on Bandai Namco’s YouTube channel to get an idea of the gameplay and world:
Tales of Symphonia really encapsulated the spirit and joy of the genre, with fast-paced battle mechanics and a compelling mythology. While the GameCube never gained much traction, Tales of Symphonia became a full-blown franchise, spawning a variety of adaptations across different media.
That’s why the game will be returning next year in spite of its age. Tales of Symphonia is nestled in the early thousands, a decade that isn’t necessarily as defined as other remakes or remasters. But it certainly deserves one, with its unique cel-shaded art design.
The remaster promises to deliver both “improved graphics and gameplay”. Any title that launched on the GameCube would be expected to be updated quite extensively to meet the button mapping. But it’s very intriguing that the gameplay style will be adjusted too. Improvement is a very subjective thing. Ideally, there will be more changes to quality of life, and not content or style.
Curious fans will be able to pre-order a “Chosen Edition” of the game. This includes art prints and stickers featuring the characters, as well as a metal case for the hard copy. It’s a little lacking compared to some other remasters, but the remaster itself ought to be enough of a reward.
