Beneath its charming exterior and nostalgic Tamagotchi characters, the recently released Apple Arcade game Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom delves into surprisingly mature themes. Surprisingly, this includes environmentalism and climate change. This is confirmed through an interview with Gameshub.
According to Chanh Ly, Publishing Lead at Bandai Namco Mobile and Executive Producer of Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom, The game’s narrative revolves around the arrival of a “Meteoritchi” on Tamagotchi Planet. This Meteoritchi causes widespread ecological disruption. Due to this, geysers erupt, hot springs dry up, and bridges crumble, isolating various Tamagotchi communities.
“We wanted to add our ‘Green’ touch, and we believe players will love saving fish from various waste buried in the water to recycle them using Risaikikaitchi, the recycling machine. We had in our hands material of great richness and variety, and could carefully and attentively explore all of it … Not to mention the uniqueness of the IP, imbued with Eastern philosophy; each animal is considered a living being in its own right.”

While younger players may simply see these as obstacles to overcome, the game’s environmental consequences are not lost on adult audiences. Players encounter characters like Gumatchi, a bear Tamagotchi who finds solace and comfort in the hot springs. This highlights the impact of environmental damage on individual well-being. The narrative also emphasizes the economic consequences of environmental issues, as players help Guruguru Town restore its vital amusement park to ensure the town’s prosperity.
The game’s approach to environmentalism goes beyond mere storytelling. Activities like recycling waste with Risaikikaitchi, the recycling machine, directly address environmental concerns and encourage players to consider real-world solutions.
Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom’s exploration of these themes is noteworthy within the typically lighthearted cozy game genre. While the game retains its relaxing and charming atmosphere, it subtly weaves in deeper messages about environmental responsibility and the interconnectedness of nature and individual lives.
Its blend of lighthearted gameplay and mature themes is not something you often see but is an entry point for younger players to engage with environmental issues. That’s not to say it doesn’t also offer experienced gamers a fresh perspective within the cozy game genre.
