Summon Quest, an upcoming roguelite action RPG from developer The Label and publisher Team17, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer.
Although a release date has not been confirmed, it’s expected to be “coming soon”. It will be available on Apple Arcade, and there’s no word on support for other platforms. You can watch the full announcement trailer on Team17’s official YouTube channel:
Although the visuals and lore of Summon Quest seem rather generic, the mechanics themselves are promising, especially for a mobile game. There are a variety of roguelite systems in place, with upgrades and randomized stages to clear. Mobile games don’t always have enough layers, and Summon Quest meets all obligatory mechanics before introducing its own hook.
Players will have the opportunity to recruit the mini bosses they defeat, and then assemble them into teams of three that can be summoned during a series of quests. So, despite all of the randomization in-game, there should still be enough flexibility for players to find their own approach in key battles.
Between the element-determined combat and mini boss collection, it brings a bit of Pokémon appeal. Summon Quest feels like the sort of world that would ordinarily end up with turn-based combat, but the real time battles are going to fit nicely with the mobile platform.
Summon Quest also happens to have a very family friendly art design. It’s a little cartoonish and colorful, akin to many mobile games, but should be a nice way to introduce younger players to these complex genres. There could be more density here than expected. And perhaps later environments that have not been revealed are going to introduce more creative creatures and settings.
