Terraformers is a colony builder that has distinguished itself through card-based mechanics, which also make the most of the theme. The demo and Early Access fan responses have smoothed out a variety of the game’s largest hiccups, and it’s resulted in a solid final product.

For example, the difficulty levels were quite divisive early on. Today’s patch notes continue to balance things out with new features, such as the ability to undo certain actions and the “improved balance of luck and randomness”. Although the RNG was always intended to force players to strategically adapt, it also caused a lot of frustration.

The core gameplay loop is surprisingly similar to a tabletop experience, with more of an emphasis on resource management than traditional simulation or survival. The visuals don’t have the highest budget, but they’re charming and simple.

Alongside other immersive elements, there is probably enough here for Terraformers to justify using the medium. There are many other titles that would succeed far more as an actual tabletop game.

Terraformers has strong fundamental mechanics which are easy to pick up, but open up the door to some unexpectedly complex situations. This helps reinforce the devs’ clear interest in replay value. More save slots and weekly challenges are some basic additions for the full launch that would have been beneficial all this time.

Overall, the full launch includes more than enough quality-of-life changes and gameplay improvements to build a new fanbase and reward patient, longtime fans.
