The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, an upcoming rollercoaster shooter set in the Dark Pictures universe, has just been delayed. Instead of launching in February, it’s now expected to release on March 16th, 2023. Aside from the need for a “polished” release, no particular reasons for the delay have been confirmed. Here’s the full statement from developer and publisher Supermassive Games:

The Dark Pictures has become a juggernaut anthology horror series, letting fans live out a horror movie by making tough decisions with unforgiving consequences. They generally have great performances include surprisingly notable actors, and bend playful stories with thrilling horror.

Developer Supermassive Games also found success with The Quarry, which doesn’t just boast some of the best horror, comedy, and surprises, but also triumphs as a party game. It was easily one of the best titles released last year in any genre. However, it was also very much in line with The Dark Pictures.

Meanwhile, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR is a virtual reality rail shooter, which is radically different. So, one can expect that today’s delay was probably the result of technical issues. These could potentially be pretty grave, if the devs were willing to miss the PlayStation VR2 launch.

The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR was originally meant to coincide with PlayStation’s launch of the new VR console on February 22nd. This is certainly disappointing, and it might raise some concern about the state of the game.

However, it does say a lot about the commitment of the devs. They were determined and bold enough to set aside the PlayStation buzz in exchange for a satisfying launch experience. A rail shooter hardly sounds as compelling as the core series’ interactive stories, so it’s important to get this spinoff right. It’d be great to see The Dark Pictures expand into other new territory in the future.
