The Foretold: Westmark Legacy, a gothic digital card game from developer Nodbrim Interactive and publisher Crytivo, has just released a new teaser. A full official trailer is planned to release on February 21st, 2023, in order to coincide with the Kickstarter campaign. However, today’s teaser does include some gameplay:
Publisher Crytivo has successfully championed a variety of indie games, so despite the Kickstarter hurdle, today’s announcement is still worth keeping an eye on. Crytivo recently revealed a new cinematic trailer for Carnival Hunt, with a clever “twist” on the asymmetrical horror genre.
The publisher has a knack for spotting creative indies, so hopefully The Foretold: Westmark Legacy will follow suit. Today’s trailer for The Foretold: Westmark Legacy hints at a cozier spin on the Arkham Horror living card game. It’s going to be a deck-builder, where players are a paranormal investigator exploring a “corrupted” peninsula, and there are multiple endings to discover.
But The Foretold: Westmark Legacy also uses its medium to include friendly cinematics for its adventure, so although some of the designs look a little generic, the overall mood has the potential to please fans of the genre.
Also, The Foretold: Westmark Legacy’s official Steam page mentions a puzzle mechanic, and although many card games involve strategy, innovative puzzles would definitely help distinguish this game. It plans to have a “short and mind-bending” story, implying there are plans for future expansions.
Ultimately, this weirdly feels like a game that might have performed better in the physical format. There are countless digital card games with unmatched IP power, such as Marvel Snap, which added Battle Mode just today.
However, it’s still best to reserve judgment until more is revealed in The Foretold: Westmark Legacy’s official trailer, since today was simply meant to tease the concepts. There is plenty of room for the devs to elaborate and improve, as the game currently has potential.
