The Glory Society, a game development cooperative, announced the suspension of operations and cancellation of their upcoming game, Revenant Hill. The announcement was made in a tweet, which stated that the decision was made due to the recent departure of two key members of the team due to serious health issues.

The tweet announcing the cancellation of Revenant Hill is a blow to fans of indie games. The game had been highly anticipated by many, and its unique setting and procedurally generated gameplay had generated a lot of excitement.

To quote the announcement:

“We are a small team and we each wear multiple hats. This is a loss of several hard to replace hats in an environment where all hats are needed. Given the realities of schedules, budgets, and the fraught task of reworking the whole project within those parameters, the team has amicably decided to suspend operations.”

The team also emphasized the importance of their well-being in the decision. “For us, this was the clear path to take for the well-being of the team, which is frankly more important than games,” the tweet stated. Health concerns are a big issue and based on the language it doesn’t sound like the team will be reversing this decision anytime soon.

Glory Society’s suspension of operations also serves as a reminder of the difficulties faced by indie game developers. Health issues that led to Revenant Hill’s cancellation are a common cause of unexpected setbacks for small teams with limited resources. You can’t get the staff needed to replace so the whole project takes a big hit.

Revenant Hill had a lot of potential to gain a huge audience and fans. The game was scheduled to be released in 2024 but was still in early development at the time of the announcement. Now it seems like the game will never see the light of day.
