The Last of Us Part 1 was originally expected to launch on March 3rd, but a new statement from developer Naughty Dog has just announced that it will be delayed until March 28th, 2023. Strategically, a specific cause for delay was not confirmed. The devs only cited the need to debut the PC version in “the best shape possible”. Here’s the full statement from Naughty Dog’s official feed:
Naughty Dogt smartly acknowledges that expectations might be unusually high following the massive success of HBO’s unanimously praised adaptation, and the opportunity to broaden their gaming audience to PC users. Also, they noted that The Last of Us probably has many newcomers to the franchise.
So, whatever the reason this game was delayed, it will surely be worthwhile for a smooth launch. Fans have been appropriately understanding, and open communication is always best, especially for larger games that have bigger stakes.
Since the delay is only going to push the game back a couple of weeks, it probably involves some simple polishing, and shouldn’t be too concerning for fans. Releasing something on PC can be tricky, though. Specs and smaller details play a larger role than casual gamers might expect.
Although players are likely disappointed, the PC platform is very unique compared to console ports. PC demands unusual features and visual expectations, often at the forefront of technological advancements. For example, NVIDIA made a big deal about which titles would support their AI-based DLSS 3 technology in last month’s CES event.
In the meantime, The Last of Us franchise has never been stronger, and the devs released an extensive retrospective last month, ahead of the 10-year anniversary. The HBO series already confirmed last week that Season 2 has gotten the green light.
