The Last Spell, a strategy roguelite RPG developed by Ishtar Games, has finally announced a 1.0 launch after its successful Early Access release last year. A new trailer reveals that The Last Spell is expected to roll out in Q1 of 2023. It will be available on Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and the Nintendo Switch. Here’s the full trailer from publisher The Arcade Crew for a review of the gameplay:
The Last Spell has a familiar setting of magic and monsters, but it also successfully combines some of the best elements from the roguelite and tower defense genres.
It has the potential to be a tremendously challenging game, thanks to its spread of difficult levels. It also incorporates lots of RPG freedom, and procedurally generated content. That includes both enemies and gear, which invites players to adapt under a good range of circumstances.
Managing resources to rebuild after key battles also creates a neat sense of consequence, not to mention breathing room. This makes it more accessible than typical roguelites, which are often deliberately frustrating for replay value.
Publisher The Arcade Crew has also championed Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, which was recently announced for January 2023. Developed by JoyMasher, it’s clear that The Arcade Crew has an eye for clever indie teams.
However, PC gaming is a very unique audience. So, it’s great to see that both Switch and PlayStation fans will get the chance to try The Last Spell, which may actually translate to console better than some of its peers.
The sheer volume of content on the screen would certainly be easier to distinguish, so some of the smaller details could be appreciated. The Last Spell would also make a great mobile game, on the Nintendo Switch.
