The Mageseeker: A League of Legends Story, an upcoming 2D pixel RPG set in the popular franchise’s universe, is officially launching on April 18th, 2023. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, as well as both current and last gen consoles for PlayStation and Xbox. From indie studio Digital Sun and Riot Forge, here’s the first gameplay look in a new PlayStation trailer:
This curious installment in the popular League of Legends universe continues to prove just how flexible it truly is, as if the remarkable success of Arcane wasn’t enough.
Pixel art is generally reserved for the indie scene, where smaller studios must contend with budget restraints, and often aim for retro nostalgia. It’s genuinely fascinating to see the League of Legends lore get that kind of makeover.
It is still more detailed than most, and the movement animations are unexpectedly smooth, capturing a strong sense of momentum. Overall, it has a high level of visual depth, and will probably boast more content density than a traditional pixel RPG. The mechanics look simple and more familiar, though.
The Mageseeker also seems to have successfully translated the broader personality of the original game, which should please longtime fans. The characters, environments, and combat look fairly consistent.
Pixel art is also more of a snug fit with the RPG elements, which should definitely play a larger role in League of Legends as it expands. The cinematics are surprisingly subdued, while the action is flashy enough to fit the franchise.
It’s all very balanced in today’s trailer, which will likely reassure anyone who may have been skeptical about League of Legends entering this genre. The Mageseeker was just announced a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully the pace keeps up, and more of the mechanics are revealed soon.
