The Magical Mixture Mill, an upcoming sim game about brewing and automating magic from developer Glowlight and publisher HOOK, will officially enter Early Access on April 5th, 2023. The game will be available on Steam, where a demo is currently available. Here’s the full release date announcement from HOOK’s Twitter feed:
More than a few witches have swept into the indie scene lately, and some titles like Mika and the Witch’s Mountain look very promising. Fortunately, The Magical Mixture Mill has managed to stand out conceptually, including its slightly offbeat sense of humor.
The Magical Mixture Mill was first announced in December with a small, song-driven trailer that showcases some actual gameplay. It also features a song that probably feels a lot more playful than the mechanics themselves, but that remains to be seen. Here’s the original game reveal trailer for reference:
The game’s official Steam page mentions a particularly, well, interesting mechanic where the in-game customers could get “hooked” and demand more complex mixtures. Between that approach, literal shrooms, and some potential puking, The Magical Mixture Mill has a little more edge to its cuteness than expected.
This will surely be beneficial for The Magical Mixture Mill. Such themes would create an amusing contrast for the premise and world, which still comes off very cute. But it’s very possible the game is mainly intended to feel charming and friendly. Either way, the humor still promises to lead to some very clever reimagining of the genre’s traditional mechanics.
If the game can make the most of its premise, it has real potential. Hopefully, it will reinforce its sense of humor, as seen in the smaller details like illness and plants that fight back.
