In A Universal Time (AUT), The Mercenaries is a unique ability inspired by Team Fortress 2. Instead of playing as a single character, this spec gives you access to the weapons and equipment of all nine mercenary classes, letting you switch playstyles depending on the situation. Here’s everything you need to know about getting The Mercenaries in AUT.

How to Get The Mercenaries Spec in A Universal Time (AUT)
To obtain The Mercenaries in A Universal Time, there’s only one way:
- Head to Alabasta and talk to Skaidev to receive a quest.
- Collect specific items and defeat The Spy.
- Return to Skaidev to claim The Mercenaries.

Before talking to Skaidev, make sure you have space in your ability storage. If your storage is full, you won’t receive The Mercenaries even after completing the quest.
How to Complete Remnants of The Mercenaries Questline in A Universal Time (AUT)
The Remnants of The Mercenaries quest is given by Skaidev, an NPC in Alabasta. You can find him on the back left side of the map, upstairs in a house. When you talk to him, he’ll give you the quest, which requires you to:
- Retrieve Grenade Launcher
- Retrieve Eyelander
- Retrieve Flamethrower
- Retrieve Medic Equipment
- Retrieve Knife
- Retrieve Chargin’ Targe
- Retrieve Rocket Launcher
- Kill The Spy
Important: All collected items must be stored inside your Item Bank for them to count toward the quest. If they’re just in your inventory, the quest won’t register them.
How to Get All Mercenary Items in A Universal Time (AUT)

To get any of the Mercenary items needed above, you just need to go around opening crates that is all. A great place to do this is in the desert killing Curses. But a great place to get the Rocket Launcher which is a common item is in the starting area against the thugs.
You can also get these items from killing The Spy boss, but it’s much easier grinding the desert.
How to Kill The Spy in AUT
The Mercenary items are dropped by The Spy, a Level 125 boss with 13,650 HP. He spawns at the Floating Village every 20 minutes.
- Each time you defeat The Spy, you have a 20% chance to get a Team Fortress 2 item.
- To get credit for the kill and qualify for a drop, you must deal at least 10% damage.
Once you have all the required items, go back to Skaidev in Alabasta and complete the quest. If you have enough ability storage space, you will immediately receive The Mercenaries.
