The New York Times buys Wordle – game to remain free

Wordle's monumental growth has not gone unnoticed, and has led to the acquisition of it by The New York Times.

When it comes to word games there have not been a whole lot of big new additions to the genre in the last few years. That’s where Wordle comes in, because it took the world by storm with players waking up each morning and testing their vocabulary against the simple to play but somewhat difficult game.

This wasn’t lost on The New York Times, because they have acquired Wordle for an “undisclosed price in the low-seven figures.” It will join their already large roster of puzzle games, which include the well-known crossword puzzles that have been a staple for years.

The big worry for many players would be if a subscription to the New York Time will be required to play Wordle. As of right now, it appears that the game will remain free. Josh Wardle, the developer of the game, stated that it will be free and they are working to make sure that your wins and streaks will remain intact.

Here’s the official statement from Josh Wardle:

While everything so far sounds good in terms of the future, we just hope that nothing too drastic changes and players of the simple word game will be able to continue to play it daily!

We are no stranger to the game, we’ve been covering it extensively in the Wordle section of our website. We also have a page that logs all of the Wordle answers from the past that you can check out!
