According to a report from Insider Gaming, the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War is set to shake things up with an open-world campaign, a first for the long-running franchise. This marks a significant departure from the series’ traditionally linear missions.
The exclusive report from our friends at Insider-Gaming said sources familiar with the game’s development shared that the open world in Black Ops Gulf War will resemble what players might find in Far Cry. This would offer freedom to navigate the map using vehicles and a fast-travel system. While the exact number of linear missions remains unconfirmed, some are still said to be integrated into the campaign.
Beyond Black Ops Gulf War, the report suggests a potential shift towards more open-world experiences in future Call of Duty titles. Call of Duty 2025, codenamed “Saturn,” is also reportedly pitched with an open-world campaign featuring multiple distinct biomes. While this concept is still in flux due to its early development stage, sources indicate that the move towards open-world design is primarily driven by streamlining development processes.
Whether this reported shift proves successful and becomes a permanent fixture in the series remains to be seen. Many players did not enjoy the open-world aspect of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. However, this was not because it was an open world; it was because it seemed like very little thought went into it. To some players, it was as if the developers just sprinkled around content and enemies and moved on.
If the next Call of Duty game hopes to lose that idea, they need to put a lot more thought into how they design an open world. This next one will supposedly be developed by Raven Software. The Black Ops Gulf War campaign should welcome back familiar faces like Adler as part of the player’s team. The game is also slated for release in October 2024.
