The Pathless, one of the most remarkable adventure indies in recent years, has just announced that a port for Switch and Xbox will both launch on February 2nd, 2023. The launch fulfills the devs’ promise to release in Winter 2022. The Pathless has been available for Apple Arcade, PC, and PlayStation since 2020.
Publisher Annapurna Interactive released a brief teaser alongside their port release date announcement:
Annapurna Interactive is probably best known as one of the publishers of Stray, which earned just about every kind of praise and award, and certainly deserved it.
However, back in 2020, developer Giant Squid launched The Pathless, an open-world fantasy adventure that was also met with unanimous praise. In fact, the soundtrack won a few awards, too. The music in The Pathless is outstanding, as it successfully combines contrasting tones and employs unique sounds. Like the art design, it’s very inspired and distinguishable from similar games in the genre.
There is an unmistakable creativity and passion in The Pathless, and it’s very scenic. So, it’s hard to imagine playing it on the go, as opposed to the biggest screen possible. Also, the Apple Arcade launch takes away some of the novelty of the Nintendo Switch’s mobility.
However, The Pathless does have a style that lines up with Nintendo’s tone, and the Switch port will surely have a smoother UI. Apple Arcade can sometimes feel a bit clunky for more ambitious games like this.
Like any other indie that finally gets an Xbox port, one can only hope for an Xbox Game Pass release later on. The Pathless is just the sort of hidden gem that helps distinguish the Xbox Game Pass from other subscription services.
