Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard’s passion for the iconic archaeologist Indiana Jones is no secret. Howard revealed a longstanding ambition: crafting an Indiana Jones game that will make everyone excited. Apparently, he has done that and more.

“I’ve wanted to make an Indiana Jones game forever,” Howard confessed (thanks, GamesRadar). This desire stretches back years, even before Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and some Elder Scrolls Online expansions by some accounts. Rumors of Howard’s interest swirled for over a decade, with former Bethesda marketing VP Pete Hines confirming Howard’s “over a decade” pursuit of the project in 2023.

Howard’s enthusiasm isn’t merely personal. He believes the franchise’s core elements – thrilling adventure, captivating puzzles, and witty charm – translate perfectly to the interactive medium. “Anyone who has seen the pitch [for the game] has immediately said, ‘Oh my god, I have to play that game right now,'” Hines recounted, highlighting the infectious excitement surrounding the project.

This excitement culminated in the unveiling of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle during the Xbox Developer Direct showcase. Developed by MachineGames, the studio behind the acclaimed Wolfenstein series, the game promises a first-person, action-adventure experience brimming with familiar elements and fresh thrills. Players will journey alongside Indy between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.

Video games with Indiana Jones have been scarce in recent years. In fact, it’s been a while since a big studio took on the IP in a major way. Howard is giving it the Triple-A touch, which may set the stage for future games.

From the trailer, we can see there was a lot of care and love put into the game. Howard is no stranger to taking on huge projects and making them work. However, that doesn’t guarantee a great game. We’ll need to wait and see how it all plays out, but it looks like it will be something to remember.
