Frogun ENCORE, an upcoming standalone sequel to the hit old school platformer Frogun, has just been announced with a new gameplay trailer. It will be connected to the previous story, but features new mechanics and more.
Developer Molegato and publisher Top Hat Studios are reteaming for Frogun ENCORE. The game doesn’t have a concrete release date, but it is expected to launch sometime this year. Here’s the full reveal trailer from the Top Hat Studios YouTube channel:
Frogun is one of a very few platformers that delivers an equal dose of nostalgia and originality. It very much feels like it could have launched among other 3D platformers of the 90’s and early 2000’s. There are adorable heroes and a central mechanic that is both very clever and challenging.
It’d be difficult to shake up that formula very much without compromising the spirit of the first game. However, the new features admittedly look fun, and remain thematically consistent. Modernizing a nostalgic premise is a tough balancing act.
Today’s trailer shows some interesting elaboration on the signature, skill-based movement of Frogun. According to the official Steam page, Frogun ENCORE will include double jumps and grapples to keep the movement flowing a little better.
Frogun hasn’t seen much criticism, but its technical flaws have certainly been noticeable. Unfortunately, hiccups like that can really compromise a platforming experience. The follow-up has smartly built a foundation to smooth those things over while expanding, too.
Frogun first launched in August of last year, so it’s a surprise to see such an ambitious sequel roll out so quickly. While everything looks a little cleaner and more complex, the world and its tone look just as playful and enjoyable as ever.
