Classified: France ’44, an upcoming turn-based strategy game set months before D-Day, has just been revealed from publisher Team17 and developer Absolutely Games. It will feature a campaign of tactical combat, multiple endings, a morale system, a Mission Creator and more.
Classified: France ’44 hasn’t confirmed a release date yet, but it’s expected sometime this year. It will be available on PC via Steam, as well as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch today’s new announcement trailer on Team17’s YouTube channel:
Today’s trailer is purely cinematic, which can certainly be frustrating. And Classified: France ’44 may have indeed benefited from waiting for a gameplay announcement trailer. Simply setting up your premise could be enough for some games. But this is delving into a very busy genre, which often requires a clever twist and a few risks to become distinguishable and successful.
However, the cinematic does set the tone of the game. It appears to be aiming somewhere between gritty realism and cheesy fun. The settings are shadowy and brooding, with some authentic inspiration for the world and weaponry. But it also has larger-than-life narration, which hints at equally splashy characters and heroics.
Fortunately, the game’s Steam page reveals quite a lot. Aside from the tactical buzz words, there are some interesting features here, such as a morale system that adds value to every bullet. Also, the enemy AI sounds pretty intelligent, becoming suspicious to stealth kills on the ground and even your broader mission victories.
Perhaps most importantly, players will get to make and share their own challenges with the Mission Creator tool, although it’s unclear just how pliable or expansive the system will be. The game has some potential, and a gameplay trailer might win over a few skeptics.
