Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has decided to cancel a live-service game based on the well-known Twisted Metal series in a major reorganization of its video game division. This decision was made public along with the news of layoffs affecting 9% of SIE’s employees, the shutdown of the PlayStation London studio, and the scrapping of several undisclosed projects.
As reported by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, The Twisted Metal live-service game was apparently being developed at Firesprite, a UK-based studio acquired by SIE in 2021. Not much is known about the game’s concept or development stage. However, industry journalist Jason Schreier explained on Twitter that the project was in its early stages and had not received final approval (“greenlit”) before it was canceled.
We have an article dedicated to the layoffs and studio closure, so we won’t touch on that. Apparently, Sony company has encountered market challenges with the “games as a service” model, which resulted in the cancellation of previous online titles based on Spider-Man and The Last of Us.
It’s hard to say how fun a Twisted Metal live-service game would have been. The series has never really taken off to that level that kept it around forever. I loved Twisted Metal 3 and Black, but I wouldn’t have liked to see the game go down the path of live service. I could have been wrong, but I guess we’ll never know.
