Brandon Winckler and Corina Boettger, both voice actors involved with the game Genshin Impact, have recently come forward claiming they have not been paid by the game’s developer, HoYoverse.
Winckler, the voice behind characters such as Kazuha’s friend, Takuya, and Nervous An, voiced their discontent in a Twitter thread. After sending a fifth email and receiving no response, Winckler took to social media to express his frustration, stating, “This is regarding Genshin Impact. Inexcusable for us as actors to be waiting 4+ months for pay when you make $86 million per month. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon problem.”
In subsequent tweets, Winckler described the hardship of working on a project but not being able to afford basic necessities due to delayed payment. They mentioned that this is a recurring issue in non-union productions, and has waited anywhere from 4-8 months for payment in the past. Despite their love for acting and the projects these studios produce, they suggested that a game of this scale should without a doubt be a union production.
Winckler concluded their thread by stating that unless the game transitions to a union contract, they will refrain from continuing their work on it. They expressed hope that others would understand their decision and empathize with their predicament.
Corina Boettger, who provides the English voice for the character Paimon in Genshin Impact, echoed Winckler’s concerns in response to their tweets. They revealed that they have been awaiting payment for sessions dating back to December 2022, which has caused them difficulty in meeting their rent obligations.
Boettger stated that they have been working for months without receiving payment, a situation they deem unacceptable. They echoed Winckler’s sentiments regarding the necessity of unions, arguing that actors need to be protected.
These allegations bring to light the pressing issue of payment disputes within the gaming industry. The responses from Winckler and Boettger underscore the need for further discussion and possible reforms in the industry’s employment practices. As of now, HoYoverse has yet to publicly respond to these allegations.
