Ubisoft first announced Roller Champions back in E3 2019, but the delayed sports game will finally be available next week on May 25th, 2022.
Here’s the official tweet from Ubisoft, featuring a short cinematic trailer:
This game has all of the potential of Rocket League. Not only is it a free-to-play release, but the visuals are equally colorful and cartoonish, despite suggesting a competitive edge.
This unique balance is one of the keys to Rocket League’s success, although similar games like Knockout City became sweaty far too quickly, and just didn’t provide enough content.
While the promo trailer doesn’t reveal much about the gameplay, a lot has already been said over the years. Basically, the game operates a lot like traditional Roller Derby. Teams of three will have to skate a lap while possessing the ball.
Back in 2019, this would have been more mainstream after a similar game was depicted in Alita: Battle Angel, but the sport continues to be popular enough all on its own. This could be a great way to introduce younger athletes to the bold, unique sport.
Game mechanics, features and story
The latest update for Roller Champions was just May 5th, a parent’s guide that revealed the basics of the game in order to establish that it’s going to be a family-friendly release.
Players will compete in multiplayer online matches, earning customizable items for their avatar and gaining fame in the future of 2032.
This fame isn’t arbitrary though, as it allows players to compete in larger arenas. Teams must earn 5 points within 10-minute rounds. You’ll be able to dodge and attack while you skate, although the violence is considered “unrealistic”.
This is probably meant to distance the game from the real-life inspiration, since Roller Derby is considered a fairly dangerous sport. But that didn’t stop the competitive nature of similar sports releases, so the PvP should still be plenty entertaining.
