Publisher Panic and developers Julian Cordero and Sebastian Valbuena recently announced their new project, Despelote, a unique soccer adventure game designed around the human experience. The game is set to debut on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam in 2024.
In a press statement, Panic’s head of publishing, Nick Suttner, shared the company’s enthusiasm for the upcoming game. Following the launch of Untitled Goose Game and the announcement of Nour: Play With Your Food, Suttner revealed that Panic has been actively reviewing pitches over the past few years. The company was particularly captivated by Despelote, praising it as a heartfelt tribute to a specific moment in time and place. According to Suttner, the game’s wit and charm give it a universal appeal, and Panic is delighted to support its global launch. Suttner also hinted at more game announcements to come later this year.
Despelote, as described by Panic, is much more than a traditional soccer game. It places players into the shoes of an eight-year-old named Julián, exploring the streets and parks of Quito. Players will be able to dribble, pass, and shoot their soccer ball around the city, engaging with its inhabitants and witnessing the reactions to their playful antics. The game environment evolves as Ecuador edges closer to qualifying for the World Cup, reflecting the country’s growing excitement.
Key features of Despelote include a semi-autobiographical narrative that captures the bittersweet and occasionally dreamlike qualities of youth. Players will have the freedom to explore a rich urban environment teeming with activities, interactions, and potential mischief. The game also boasts a physics-based soccer ball, designed to provide a satisfying kicking experience from a first-person perspective. The vibrant game world is populated by a diverse range of characters, offering opportunities for humorous and authentic conversations. To create a strong sense of place, Despelote incorporates photos and audio recorded on location in Ecuador.
