Valorant has just posted the first in a series of Agent Insights, where the Characters team will give behind-the-scenes details about the creation of new agents like Fade.

Here’s the tweet from Valorant’s official feed, including artwork of the popular new agent:

Valorant was updated with Fade back in April, and casual players and pros alike had positive responses to the new abilities inspired by fear. But her personality and designs are also a big hit, and now fans can learn how all of these ideas came together.

Agent Insight details and breakdown

Initially, it seems that Fade was built to compete with Sova for gameplay balancing. From there, the Characters team felt that a bounty hunter fit the role best. This quickly determined Fade’s core mechanics and theme, since being hunted by Fade could feel terrifying.

Rayn Clements, a narrative writer for the team, confirms that “all the narrative work sort of just fell into place” thanks to the bounty hunter foundation.

However, this also resulted in a gritty look, and the Characters team did struggle to balance out her darker attire. Fortunately, Fade’s look also had a clear inspiration from the large Turkish playerbase.

It turns out that Fade’s heterochromia was introduced thanks to Turkish Angora cats. Her pendants, ring, and tattoos are also inspired by Turkish culture. Aside from that great representation, her allusion to cats also ended up influencing the look of her ultimate.

So, Lead Character Producer John Goscicki hopes that Fade’s design makes it clear that there’s much more to her than an intimidating, edgy look.

Ultimately, the first post for Agent Insights should engage fans of Valorant by revealing tiny details about the character that could easily be overlooked, especially by more casual fans.

Hopefully, the Agent Insights will have some kind of retrospective about earlier agents, but for now it’s clear that the series should be expected for all new additions.
