Divine Duel, the fantasy fighting VR title from Immersion Games, has just revealed with a new trailer that its launch will be delayed until next year, but it will also be Free to Play.
Originally planned to release in late 2022, Divine Duel will now be available on Meta Quest 2 and Steam VR in 2023. VR fans can register for the Meta Quest Beta now. You can watch today’s full trailer on developer Immersion Games’ YouTube channel here:
Divine Duel focuses on loading its simple, central game mode with lots of content, which is a pretty clever move for the VR space. The devs found a strong premise, where players can battle as powerful “Celestials” in a small, contained arena.
This prioritizes the strategy of your loadouts, which can be customized with a remarkable variety of spells and weapons. Players will also need to constantly dodge and time their defenses well. The ability to battle others in real time will help create a sense of community.
There’s also a general self-awareness in the presentation, smartly leaning into its over-the-top style. This kind of approach will be more accessible, although VR games are pretty scarce, so there isn’t quite so much competition.
Now that Divine Duel will be a free-to-play game, it is basically a must-play. It’s a welcome surprise, since the VR genre is a very expensive scene, given the required technology. However, it’s now unclear if this implies there will also be free-to-play drawbacks, such as a future brimming with overpriced in-game purchases and paywalls.
There isn’t much to Divine Duel’s gameplay, even if the loadouts are dense enough, offering just two modes for launch. But at least VR fans will get more mileage out of their steep investments without taking any risks.
