Wild Country Is Like Sim City and Hearthstone According to Design Director

Wild Country has a lot of similarities to many things apparently, and we've got the details here.

In a recent interview with GameRant, Becky Matthew, Design Director at Lost Native, compared the upcoming city-building card game to two popular titles: Sim City and Hearthstone. She said “Wild Country is a cozy-competitive city-building card game that aims to be approachable to both newcomers and veterans of the genre alike,”

“I think that has been a difficult thing – merging that complexity with the coziness, especially considering Hearthstone – there’s so much to remember in them, right? Especially if you’re not familiar with the conventions of all these different card games. We’ve tried to take those and create systems and different approachability options that people can ease their way in, so it’s almost like their first experience with games that can open up doors to a wider portfolio of games.”

According to the interview, there are a lot of other influences like The Office and Legends of Runeterra. I don’t really believe we’ll see all those influences or see enough to understand what they specifically affected. However, that bodes well for anyone looking for a game they can get into without worrying much about mechanics.

When speaking on the similarities between Wild Country and Sim City, Matthew said:

“If you’re familiar with Sim City, there’ll be a lot of shared mechanics between the two, except obviously ours will showcase them in a card format. When you place a building, each building will have a type. So, we’ll have Residential or Commercial. Each one will give you a bonus based on what is placed next to. So Industrial, for example, next to a Residential is not going to work for the Residential – they didn’t want to be next to a power block. That will have a negative effect on your bonus.”

So while the influence seems to be everywhere, it seems like the game is more of a card game mixed with a city builder. Based on trailers from their Twitter, there seem to be some RPG elements as well. I am curious to see how the industry takes a mix like that. Wild Country doesn’t have a set release date yet, but we will keep an eye out as development goes on.
