The Monk class: A detailed overview

Remember those unarmed fighters who could take down an enemy with a flurry of swift punches and kicks in your favorite martial arts movies? That’s pretty much what a Monk in D&D is, but perhaps with more hilarious comic failures. These martial masters bring speed, agility, and raw unarmed combat prowess to the battlefield. Armed with monk weapons like quarterstaffs or unarmed, they’re ready to leap into the thick of the fight. But there’s more to them than just martial prowess. Some great Monk abilities are the following:

  • Flurry of Blows
    • Starting at 2nd level, Monks can spend 1 ki point to unleash a Flurry of Blows, making two rapid-fire unarmed strikes as a bonus action.
  • Patient Defense
    • Then, starting at 3rd level, they gain the ability to enter a state of hyper-focus of Patient Defense, letting them use their reaction to halve the damage they take from an attack through a feature called Patient Defense.
