World War Z: Aftermath, a comprehensive version of 2019’s hit zombie shooter based on the blockbuster movie, has revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Horde Mode XL. The highly requested update will roll out on January 24th, 2023. World War Z: Aftermath is available now on PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Here’s the full trailer from PlayStation’s YouTube channel:
World War Z, both the original movie and game adaptation, largely distinguish themselves for the epic scale of their zombie swarms and destruction.
The movie may have very few ties to the source material, but it was a surprise hit thanks to its friendly rating, frenetic pacing and globetrotting. Exploring a zombie apocalypse around the entire world was a very satisfying idea from the book. World War Z: Aftermath smartly added even more locations to survive.
World War Z: Aftermath mainly operates as another Left 4 Dead clone, with lengthy cooperative missions that are filled with more last stands instead of breakneck chase sequences. This was disappointing for some, but fans of the game’s influences were pleased, since this predated Back 4 Blood by a couple of years.
Now, it seems that the devs are finally going to double down on the signature swarms this month, supporting their community well after launch. It’s been a long time since the game received an update, so this is a welcome surprise. Frankly, any new content is a little unexpected.
Without new areas or content, player interest has waned over the years. The gameplay loop is very familiar and basically founded on novelty. Still, World War Z: Aftermath is a fun party game, and it’s probably superior to most of its competing Left 4 Dead clones. In fact, it has generally retained higher fan reviews than Back 4 Blood itself.
