Microsoft‘s plans to incorporate AI into gaming have been making headlines lately, following a job listing on the tech giant’s website searching for a Principal Software Engineer experienced in gaming and artificial intelligence to join the Xbox Gaming AI Team. Today, Microsoft solidified its commitment to AI-powered gaming by announcing a partnership with Inworld AI.

A newly published article on Microsoft’s website shed light on this collaboration with the AI company. Microsoft has entered into a multi-year partnership with Inworld AI to develop AI-based game dialogue and narrative tools at scale. Inworld AI will contribute its expertise in working with generative AI models for character development, while Microsoft will provide its cloud-based AI solutions, including Azure OpenAI Service, along with insights from Microsoft Research and the strengths of Team Xbox in revolutionizing accessible and responsible creator tools for all developers.

Microsoft and Inworld’s primary objective is to deliver an accessible, responsibly designed multi-platform AI toolset to assist and empower creators in dialogue, story, and quest design. The toolset offers game designers an AI design copilot that will help them expand creatively, turning prompts into detailed scripts, dialogue trees, quests, and more. In addition, the toolset will include an AI character runtime engine that can be integrated into the game client, introducing entirely new narratives with dynamically generated stories, quests, and dialogue for players to experience.

The integration of AI in fields reliant on human creativity and craftsmanship has long been a controversy. As expected, this move by Microsoft has prompted concerns about profit-driven decisions dependent on AI-generated content. This has raised questions about its potential repercussions for professionals such as actors, writers, and game designers within the gaming industry.

The convergence of AI and gaming remains a contentious topic that will continue to spark debate and shape the future of the industry. As Microsoft and Inworld AI venture further into this partnership, the gaming community awaits the unfolding impact on the gaming landscape.
