Discord is the most commonly used app for communities on the internet, but it started as a place for gamers to talk to friends and share their favorite games. Now, Discord is returning to its roots with an update to the Xbox functionality that will allow players to stream their Xbox gameplay to a Discord call, currently available for Xbox Insiders.
The news comes from a Discord blog post where the developer states that players will soon be able to bring the feeling of playing along with friends on the same couch to Xbox. The new feature is only available to those in the Xbox Insider program, with it expected to release to wider audiences sometime “soon.”
Players will need to connect their Discord accounts to their Xbox accounts by going into the app on a computer or mobile device. Go into your Settings, then Connections, then click the Xbox button to be redirected to the option to log in with your account. All players can use the app on Xbox, but Insiders should be able to begin using the streaming feature today.
Discord has been evolving beyond its PC-based origins and is connecting players on more devices than ever with no signs of slowing down. While it’s unclear when the feature will become available to wider audiences, the fact it’s available to all Xbox Insiders shows that it’s in pretty good working condition.
There is very light functionality for Discord on PlayStation and none on the Nintendo Switch, so the app could be eyeing further functionality on those devices following success with Xbox.
