According to a tweet from leaker @billbil_kun, a new “Velocity Green” wireless controller may launch on February 28th, 2023. They have been considered reliable before, and Microsoft did announce a new controller earlier this month. Here’s the full tweet, which appears to include a teased image of the upcoming controller:
Microsoft recently revealed the “Stellar Shift” controller on February 7th, so a new Velocity Green model would likely boast many of the same features. Xbox shared an extensive blog post detailing all of Stellar Shift’s features, including a hybrid D-pad, as well as unique and textured grips. Here’s a full look at the Stellar Shift from Xbox’s official Twitter feed:
Releasing another controller so quickly would present an unusual pace for Microsoft. When they teased their Elite Series 2 controllers back in September 2022, it stood alone. Of course, the new Stellar Shift and Velocity Green are primarily interested in cosmetics, and don’t seem to add very much tech.
Expressing your fandom with your accessories is common, but there are other opportunities to customize your own Xbox controller, including via official methods. Hopefully, Velocity Green would be able to distinguish itself enough to become worthwhile.
Stellar Shift had a cosmic theme that offered more freedom to stand out, and a shimmer would make less sense without a proper theme.
It sometimes feels like Xbox is trying to play catch-up with PlayStation’s remarkable DualSense controllers, which are filled to the brim with the latest features, but Microsoft does provide a surprising variety of inspired cosmetics.
Xbox didn’t announce Stellar Shift until the last moment, but they might give fans a better look at Velocity Green sometime soon, if it does launch next week.
