Dread Dawn, an upcoming open world zombie survival game from developer and publisher Kioop, released a new prototype gameplay trailer today. It will feature swarms, exploration, resource management, camp defense and more.

While it’s far too early for a release window, Dread Dawn will be available on Steam. According to a tweet from the game’s official feed, more details should be expected soon:

Although the game still currently has its working title the City of plague on Steam, a follow-up tweet from the devs ensures they will “fix that soon”, so Dread Dawn should be the final name.

The first thing that leaps out about Dread Dawn is the art design, which partly resembles Midnight Fight Express. The physics of that kind of animation creates a grounded freedom, which balances out with the simplistic character visuals. This in turn breathes a lot of life into the swarms of zombies, which boast an impressive World War Z level of density.

Today’s trailer also shows off a fair variety of locations and storytelling, with intriguing human rituals and some exploration. Areas like the prison should bring a grin to Walking Dead fans.

Dread Dawn’s Steam page elaborates quite a lot on the mechanics. The need to gather resources, plant crops, and trade with other survivors are all fun additions in the zombie survival genre.

There’s an unexpected amount of content here that should help elevate it above typical zombie defense indies. The Steam page also claims that the city is highly interactive, where the smallest details could contain essential resources.

It’s all very ambitious, and has the potential to excel in pacing, which many comparable titles struggle with. Today’s prototype trailer is already encouraging, so it’ll be great to see something final.
