Today, almost two decades after the game debuted on PC, Introversion Software announced the release of a new Darwinia update, called the Darwinia 10000th Anniversary Version. The new patch is currently available to all players as part of a free update set to, in its developer’s words, bring ”an undisputed indie classic bang up to date”.

According to the official post describing all the new features and enhancements part of the 10000th Anniversary Version, the update will bring to players a completely rewritten graphical engine, fully compatible with modern devices. The graphical changes will include anti-aliasing support, as well as support for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, anisotropic texture filtering, and higher fidelity colors.

The game will also support up to 7.1 surround sound systems, as well as feature cloud save, on-screen keyboard support, and tuned settings for the Steam Deck. Performance-wise, the title also requires less energy to run. Apart from that, the 10000th Anniversary Version will also bring to the table a wide array of fixes ”on numerous axes, including scripting, level editing, input handling, graphics, sound, stability, and game AI.”

It’s important to point out that the game’s PC version will now only run on devices that support the OpenGL 3.3, Vulkan 1.1, Direct3D 11, or the Metal graphics APIs. The game’s macOS version will now also support both Intel and Apple Silicon.

Both games were later ported for the Xbox consoles as part of the Darwinia+ collection.
