Trepang2, the relentlessly bloody action shooter from developer Trepang Studios and publisher Team17, will officially arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S “later this year” according to a new tweet from the game’s official feed.
An exact release date has not been confirmed for these ports yet. However, Trepang2 launches onto PC today. You can watch a console announcement trailer on the PlayStation YouTube channel:
Trepang2 has gained a lot of hype since the release date was announced in April, thanks to its unwavering dedication to mayhem and blood. That chaos is almost certainly enough to help the game thrive, and it’s mentioned as a highlight in our full review of Trepang2.
The unforgiving ferocity of Trepang2 is commendable, and it is absolutely certain to entertain fans of the genre with lots of pulpy grit. This no-nonsense simplicity promises to successfully harken back to classic 80’s action movies, where most of the plots were high concept and meant only to bridge overwhelming shootouts with unstoppable heroes.
The art design can sometimes look a little plain and glossy, as in today’s PlayStation trailer. But this does make it feel like your over-the-top story is imposing on an ordinary world, and it also makes it easier to distinguish all of the carnage.
The graphics and animation are genuinely impressive for an indie, with lots of thought put into reactions and physics. Even the smallest details are designed to create a sense of impact, which should result in more personality for each weapon you use. It also makes the world feel more interactive and immersive.
Trepang2 should be a thrill on next-gen consoles, and if it ever joined the subscription services on PlayStation and Xbox, it would likely double its audience.
