Trepang2, an upcoming sci-fi and first-person shooter from developer Trepang Studios and publisher Team17, will officially launch on June 21st, 2023. It will be available on PC via Steam, with no word yet on support for other platforms. You can watch the full release date trailer, featuring new gameplay, on the Trepang Studios YouTube channel here:
The first thing that stands out about Trepang2 is how proudly gory and frantic the gameplay is. There are nearly Evil Dead volumes of blood here, mixed with basic old school movement that keeps the pace at a fever pitch.
Trepang2 is so utterly dedicated to the tone, it’s a relief that today’s trailer shows just how well the devs understand its appeal. The trailer also has some terrific editing, because the action and music sync up like a rhythm game, making the action feel even more hard-hitting. It helps that the music already has plenty of attitude.
Trepang2 feels very much like a cross between RoboCop and the Hardcore Henry that should have been, tactically incorporating just enough sci-fi to distinguish the game.
It does seem as if the environments could become a little redundant, though. The Die Hard formula works by taking full advantage of every nook and cranny of a unique setting, so hopefully Trepang2 follows suit.
Even if the mechanics escalate, the destruction will probably feel more limited if the devs don’t get really creative. There have already been many comparisons to F.E.A.R., a classic title with a similar premise and equally unapologetic action, but that kind of inspiration should please action fans regardless.
The devs don’t have other games to consider, but Team17 has championed a variety of successful indies. They recently teased a campaign mode for Age of Darkness: Final Stand, and announced family friendly RPG Summon Quest earlier this week.
