RoadOut may have put a lot of blatant influences and gameplay mechanics in the blender, but they do seem to agree with each other surprisingly well.

The apocalyptic world, vehicular carnage and retro visuals may call Mad Max to mind, which was also recently referenced in a new trailer for action indie Badlands Crew. But RoadOut also has a bloody and over-the-top attitude that resembles Grand Theft Auto, which was specifically mentioned on the Steam page.

Today’s trailer shows off just how much the devs play with top-down perspectives, both in regard to scale and orientation. There’s a constant sense of motion, which should keep the pacing frenetic. The art design has some terrific retro creativity, though some of the environments look a little straightforward.

It’s fun to see that although RoadOut’s world feels familiar, the game will also be quite story driven. The game’s official Steam page adds that the hero is directly tied into the cause of the apocalypse. This makes the lore feel more personal and intriguing.

Ultimately, RoadOut looks like a pulpy and ambitious indie that’s absolutely packed with ideas. It’ll feature trading, crafting, racing, puzzles, and more. But it seems to avoid becoming a mess by streamlining each of these features, and unifying them with lore.
