Badlands Crew, an upcoming action and strategy sim indie from developer Runner Duck and publisher Curve Games, has just released an extensive new “first look” gameplay trailer. It breaks down core mechanics with pre-alpha footage, including battle wagon and crew customization, a dynamic open world map and more.
Badlands Crew has not confirmed an exact release date, but it’s slated to launch sometime in 2024 according to the recent announcement trailer. It will be available on PC via Steam, and support for other platforms hasn’t been announced. You can watch today’s new gameplay overview trailer on the Curve Games YouTube channel:
The vehicles of Badlands Crew, reminiscent of Mad Max, are a major highlight. Fortunately, today’s trailer showcases an impressive level of vehicle customization, which is a first for the Crew series. Players can customize vehicles with paint, decals, and an overwhelming volume of parts.
These parts range from wheels and weapon stations to drum sets and speakers, for fans of the Doof Warrior. It’s appreciated that players can add as much personality as they want, in addition to the practicality of traditional sim mechanics.
Permadeath returns for Badlands Crew, but surprisingly, the crew members you lose in battle are enshrined with memorial statues. It’s thematically neat, but also a convenient way to reference their specs and cosmetics if you plan on creating a similar character. The flexibility of the new Skill system is definitely an improvement over previous Crew games.
The world also feels more responsive than ever, as “influence” is adjusted based on the different strongholds you take. Since there’s a clear goal to work your way to the antagonist’s dominion in the east, the expansive map will also be more accessible for those who don’t generally like open worlds.
