Hyper Light Breaker, an action and adventure RPG indie from developer Heart Machine and publisher Gearbox Publishing, has officially pushed its Steam Early Access release to 2024.
While a new release date hasn’t been confirmed, a development update video hints it is now expected “early next year”. The video doesn’t cite any specific reason for the delay, other than the opportunity for a “stronger first step into open development”.
Hyper Light Breaker will be available on PC via Steam, with no word on other platforms yet. You can watch today’s Early Access update trailer on the game’s official YouTube channel:
In today’s update video, the devs mostly recap their premise, which features a new open world for every run. But there are some fresh glimpses of gameplay, which still impress. The vast landscapes create some really neat contrast by combining futuristic themes and natural environments.
It’s a world that has already proven its potential intrigue in Hyper Light Drifter, so the 3D approach is certain to please existing fans. Online co-op is also a friendlier way to experience it, so hopefully there are plans to support more platforms later on.
It’s a shame that Hyper Light Breaker has been delayed, and for so long, especially after building hype with the IGN gameplay preview back in March. It could be difficult to ramp up buzz again, but the game is undeniably ambitious. It could be likely to crash and burn at launch without the proper care.
Also, the devs appear to have further ideas for Early Access. So, fans could potentially see even more features incorporated. Either way, having a smoother launch for Early Access is certain to help make open development more constructive. It’ll be more enjoyable to play, and the devs will get to fine tune great ideas rather than overhauling them.
