World’s Edge Creative Director Adam Isgreen recently spoke about the future of the Age of Empires franchise. He revealed plans to introduce a mobile title that blends RTS elements with mini-games. Making an RTS on mobile isn’t easy, so some things need to be adjusted as production continues.
According to an interview with Windows Central, this isn’t a true RTS experience. The mobile game will incorporate core Age of Empires gameplay aspects while adapting to the mobile platform. Specific details about the core gameplay loop remain unavailable, but Isgreen emphasized the importance of retaining the series’ DNA in the mobile title. He likened this philosophy to the visual continuity between classic and modern Aston Martin cars, highlighting the desire to maintain a recognizable brand identity.
“I can’t tell you how absorbed I get [playing Age of Empires: Mobile], you know, like you can fish, but it’s a mini-game… That’s part of that unique dynamic of Age of Empires, right, Is that I can build a city, I can go wage war, or I can just like chill and fish like. And I love that diversity, you know? And yeah, it’s really great to see that it’s been captured well and that, you know, it’s still upheld that kind of pace that we love in Age of Empires.”

One interesting detail is the addition of a fishing mini-game, suggesting the possibility of other activities beyond the usual RTS gameplay. Isgreen described it as a kind of mini-game with the goal of giving players the freedom to participate in more relaxed activities alongside strategic conquest.
The mobile title is being created in partnership with Timi Studios, which is known for its work on games like Call of Duty: Mobile. Isgreen is happy with the partnership, praising Timi’s respect for the Age of Empires franchise and their dedication to preserving its core values.
While details are limited on the mobile game, more was said in the interview about the Age of Empires franchise. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition recently introduced the Victors and Vanquished DLC, which includes 19 new scenarios created by a former fan who has since joined the development team. Additionally, a remake of the original Age of Mythology, titled Age of Mythology: Retold, is set to launch simultaneously on Xbox and PC, marking a first for the series.
We go over Age of Mythology in more detail in another report. We’ll have to see how it all goes because it’s hard to lose RTS elements of an Age of Empires game and still have it be fun.
