New Editor and Curated Word List
On November 7th, 2023, Tracy Bennett, who joined The Times as an associate puzzle editor in 2020, became the editor of Wordle. With this change, the game now has a Times-curated word list, and it will be programmed and tested like the Spelling Bee and the Crossword. This update is intended to keep the game focused on vocabulary that’s fun, accessible, lively, and varied.
Under the new editorial guidelines, Wordle’s answer list consists of five-letter words that fit the desired criteria. However, the answer will not include plural forms of three- or four-letter words ending in “ES” or “S.” For instance, players will never see FOXES or SPOTS as the answer, but words like GEESE or FUNGI might appear. While FOXES or SPOTS can be used as guess words to help narrow down the answer, they will never be the actual solution.
Although the answer list is curated, the much larger dictionary of English words that are valid guesses will not be curated. The choice of guess words is left to individual solvers, allowing for personal strategies and preferences.
With the introduction of a dedicated editor and a curated word list, Wordle maintains its commitment to an enjoyable and challenging word-guessing experience. While plural words are not entirely excluded, specific plural forms of three- or four-letter words will not appear as the answer. The update ensured that the game remains focused on vocabulary that is engaging, diverse, and accessible to players of all skill levels.
