Tielfings was a race added in a patch to Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access, and fans were happy they were added due to their long history in Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). To cut a long short, they are descendent of humans who made deals with devils., but the bloodline carries the gifts given to them. There are three Subraces to choose from, Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, and Zariel when choosing a Tiefling as a race. However, choosing the right Subrace is just as important as race, as some are better for different classes than others. So here’s some information on the best Tiefling Subraces, Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, and Zariel for Baldur’s Gate 3.

What is the Best Subrace for Tiefling to choose in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Depending on the Class you want depends on the Tiefling Subclass you should choose in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, from the full release of BG3, each character gets +2 and +1 bonus to spend on whatever you please. These stats are not locked behind subraces etc, anymore. As in early access, Zariel used to have a Strength +1, so it was more inclined towards melee-based classes. Now, the only thing that changes between the three, is the starting cantrip they have.

In Early Access, two of the Subraces had a cantrip called Thaumaturgy, which grants you Advantage on intimidation and performance checks. Now that is not the case. Each Subrace has their own starting Cantrip.

If you want to keep Thaumaturgy, as it’s a great skill to have, especially for being the face of the group, go with Zariel, however, if that doesn’t work, just hit them with your blade.

Asmodeus is great if you want to save your spells using Produce Fire Cantrip to save spells for checks. And Mephistopheles has Mage Hand, which is great in specific situations, as frequently shown in the hit D&D show Critical Role.

Why should you choose a Tiefling in Baldur’s Gate 3?

You should choose a Tiefling in Baldur’s Gate 3 because the race differs from the first five starting companions, and diversity is good. The more diverse and unique your Classes and Races are, the better for proper world-building and immersion you may have.

Tieflings have a high stat in Charisma, and you want your main character to have face skills so that they can succeed in dialogue, so parts of the game are not locked behind these choices. Allowing your MC to always lead will have a higher chance of obtaining better outcomes from dialogue, and it’s just easier to do. If you are the face of the D&D party, it’s better to lack damage and go for social skills, have high Insight, Perception, Persuasion, Intimidation, and so on. They have great damage, and you cannot pass any dialogue checks.

Unless you don’t want your character always to initiate dialogue, you can have your companions do it for you, but this involves remembering who is the best one to do so and what skills they have. More so, it makes your character seem part of the background rather than an integral party member.

They are also resistant to fire, so they take half of any incoming fire damage. Now, this is great because of fireballs. Fireball is amazing when you cast them, but not so much when on the receiving end of them!

I enjoy playing as a Tiefling because they are seen as outsiders and are widely disliked in the D&D universe. But I enjoy playing as one more as the face of the party. Seeing a Tiefling swan up to any NPC and get all the information out of them with ease, even though they are disliked. The simple things!

A Guide to Tiefling Subraces in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are three Subraces of Tieflings in Baldur’s Gate 3—Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, Zariel— and while they are mostly the same, one is more different than the other two, as it is more adept for a melee class than a spellcaster.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Tieflings

Tiefling Background

Descended from devils of the Nine Hells, tieflins face constant suspicion in Faerun. Thankfully, their arcane abilities make them natural survivals.

Tiefling Racial Features and Traits

Here are the Tiefling Racial Features and traits for Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • The Tiefling’s racial feature is a base speed of 9 or more per turn.
  • Hellish Resistance—you have resistance to fire and only take half damage from it.
  • Darkvision—you can see in the dark out to a range of 12 metres.

Asmodeus Tiefling

Bound to Nessus, the deepest layer of the Hells, these tieflings inherited the ability to wield fire and darkness from the archdevil Asmodeus’ infernal bloodline.

Asmodeus Cantrip

  • Produce Flame-Conjuration Cantrip
    • A flame in your hand sheds a light in a 9m radius and deals 1~8 Fire damage when thrown.
    • Until a Long Rest

Asmodeus Best Classes

  • Bard
  • Sorcerers
  • Wizard
  • Warlock

Mephistopheles Tiefling

Decsended from the archdevil Mephistopheles, these tieflings are gifted with a particular affinity for arcane magic.

Mephistopheles Cantrip

  • Mage Hand-Conjuration Cantrip
    • Create a spectral hand that can manipulate and interact with objects.
    • 10 turns.
    • Range-18m

Mephistopheles Best Classes

  • Bard
  • Sorcerers
  • Wizard
  • Warlock

Zariel Tiefling

Tieflings from Zariel’s bloodline are empowered with martial strength, and can channel searing flame to punish their enemies.

Zariel Cantrip

  • Thaumaturgy-Transmutation Cantrip
    • Gain Advantage on Intimidation and Performance Checks
    • 10 Turns

Zariel Best Classes

  • Barbarian
  • Bard
  • Fighter
  • Paladin

Overall, if you want a melee class go Zariel Subrace. They can still be the face of your party, with Intimidation. Bard class will still be a good fit for them, and they’ll be decent with a sword, so Paladin or a Fighter would also be great.

If you want a spellcaster, Asmodeus and Mephistopheles Subraces are better fits. Asmodeus if you want a fire cantrip to save your beefier spells for dialogue choices and the like. And Mephistopheles is a more explorative or cunning spellcaster with clever use of the Mage Hand cantrip.
