Bellwright, the new title from Donkey Crew, was recently announced in March to be coming to Steam sometime later this year. Not much was known at that time, but now players can access a demo and get a first look at their journey, with a developer stream planned on the Steam Next Fest page at 12 p.m. PT, available on the game’s page afterward.
The Steam Next Fest demo features the start of the hero’s journey in Bellwright when they are fleeing their home of Karvenia following being framed for murder and sentenced to death. What will follow is an open world that will ask players to raise up troops and attempt to conquer back the kingdom that they once called home.
The demo shows players engaging with the world, taking on fights as they build their equipment and command troops across a variety of grasslands. It’s just a demo, so don’t expect to be able to take back the kingdom in one go, but it will give you a pretty basic understanding of the gameplay and complexities before the game releases later this year if there is no delay.
Donkey Crew has previous experience with an open-world genre with Last Oasis, which was released in March 2020, although the game sits around a 64 review score on Steam. The reviews seem to claim that the game has balancing issues and there was a lot of potential, but the developer abandoned it to move on to Bellwright after its announcement in March. Updates stopped on Last Oasis around last November.
The gameplay for Bellwright looks very similar to series like Mount & Blade or even Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which will likely share some similar themes.
