After journeying from the Druid’s Grove in Baldur’s Gate 3, my adventure took a turn towards the intriguing west. There, on the banks of a tranquil river, I chanced upon the mystifying Cave and inside an OwlBear Nest. Its dark corners harbored an enigma that sparked my curiosity, and inside was a chest called the Gilded Chest of Selûne, but opening it took me about ten minutes to figure out, so let me save you some time and tell you how to do it!

How to open the Gilded Chest of Selûne in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3

To sum up quickly, how to open the Gilded Chest of Selûne in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Head west from Druid’s Grove to the Owlbear Cave.
    • Leave Shadowheart at the entrance if you want to romance or save a headache.
  • Avoid the Mama Owlbear; altogether and go left when you can, and use the cragged rocks to climb down towards the Gilded Chest.
  • Jump over to the statue and pick up the Selûnite Prayer Sheet from the alcove behind it.
  • Give the Prayer Sheet to a party member proficient in Religion but not Shadowheart.
  • Use the character to read the Prayer Sheet close to the chest, which will disarm the trap.
  • Open the Gilded Chest of Selûne to claim the loot inside.

How to open the Gilded Chest of Selûne

The Owlbear Cave, located to the west of the Blighted Village and north of where you’re positioned, is not as menacing as it sounds. Yes, there’s an Owlbear in there, but believe me, there’s more to this adventure than a confrontation. But to save yourself some grief, if you are trying to romance Shadowheart, ungroup and leave the companion at the entrance. I’ll explain later.

Instead of directly engaging with the Owlbear, go left and use the jagged rocks to descend towards the central pool within the cave. That’s where I saw it: the Gilded Chest of Selûne, resplendent in its blue glow amidst the watching eye of a statue.

The presence of the Owlbear, and its cub, may urge you to initiate a fight. However, if you can resist that urge, it may be to your advantage as the Owlbear cub could potentially become an ally back at your camp in Baldur’s Gate 3. So, the decision is entirely yours, and it doesn’t sway the grander narrative. However, if you’re on the evil path, accept the urge and kill for role-playing purposes, but I will never forgive you.

However, a word of caution before you rush to pry open the Gilded Chest. A spell protects it, which can harm your character severely; luckily, I had Shadowheart in my party to give me a quick heal. So a chest that cannot be opened, so how do you solve the puzzle? After five mins or so racking my brain, I decided to try and jump to the statue, and alas, it worked!

Lo and behold, behind the statue, there’s a small alcove that hides a Selûnite Prayer Sheet. A keen Perception check will reveal this hidden item. Swiftly add it to your inventory before jumping back to the chest.

Now, here comes the fun, if not slightly intricate, part. You have this Selûnite Prayer Sheet, but who in your party is going to make sense of it? I found that the best candidate is a character who’s proficient in Religion and, of course, not Shadowheart.

Next, bring your religious expert near the chest. Access your inventory, right-click on the Selûnite Prayer Sheet, and select “read.” Magic! The Gilded Chest of Selûne unlocks, nullifying the dangerous spell that previously guarded it. If you don’t succeed at first, reposition yourself before the Gilded Chest and give it another shot.

What’s Inside the Gilded Chest in BG3?

Upon opening, the chest reveals a Moondrop Pendant, an Idol of Selûne, a Silver Necklace, and a Bloodstone. Nothing extravagant, but who can say no to hard-earned loot?!

So, that’s the journey from spotting the Owlbear Cave to unlocking the Gilded Chest of Selûne. A blend of stealth, strategy, and intuition can help you conquer this hidden puzzle chest in Baldur’s Gate 3, all without shedding a single drop of Owlbear blood! Or so I hope…

What happens if you take Shadowheart to the Gilded Chest of Selûne?

So if you take Shadowheart with you when you open the Gilded Chest of Selûne, she’ll try to intervene. This will cause you to have to go through several skill checks—Insight, Intimidation, and Persuasion—and you get the option to use Insight to probe into her reasoning. However, she does not take kindly to this, and if you want to romance her, as I suggested, leave her at the entrance and save yourself a potential headache.
