Companions are a massive part of your journey through Baldur’s Gate 3. However, each one already comes prepackaged with a class and abilities. This may disappoint some people due to really liking that character, but the class doesn’t fit well with the rest of the party due to the limited party size.
Well, I’m here to save the day, and we’ll learn how to respec your companions in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to Respec Companions in Baldur’s Gate 3
To respec your companions is pretty straightforward in Baldur’s Gate 3. But first, you must have found Withers, an undead NPC located in the Dank Crypt at the temple ruins directly north of the Overgrown Ruins in BG3. Once you’ve spoken to him, he’ll start appearing in your camp. Then just follow these steps:
- Find and Recruit the Companion: This is as clear as I can make it. Some companions you get in Act 1, others will be later on.
- Head to the Camp: Fast travel to the Camp.
- Speak to your Companion: Control the Companion you want to respec and speak to Withers, the undead NPC.
- Choose the Respec option: Keep an eye out for a dialogue choice saying, “Can you help me change my class? (100) – Choose this option, which will cost you 100 Gold.

Once you’ve paid your fee, you’ll be taken to the character customization screen, where you can modify certain things about the character.

What Can You Change About Your Companion in BG3?
You can change the following things about your Companion in BG3; let’s dive right in:
- Class Selection: The first thing you’ll notice is the ability to choose a new class for your Companion. With a total of 12 options available, the world is your oyster. Oh, and if you’re feeling particularly fancy, you can even select a subclass within the chosen class.
- Spells and Cantrips: For those of us who like to dabble in the arcane, respeccing brings the opportunity to pick and prepare spells and cantrips. It’s like a magical shopping spree, and who can resist that?
- Skills and Abilities: This is where the rubber meets the road. You can tweak abilities, skills, and proficiencies to mold your Companion into the perfect asset for your playstyle.

Once you’re done, remember to Finalizing Changes, as you do not want to lose everything you’ve just done, so ensure you hit that Confirm button. After the respec process, your Companion will emerge with a new class, modified abilities, and a whole new vibe.
