Call of Duty is officially going to get a new board game adaptation from Arcane Wonders. Activision will be partnering with Arcane Wonders to bring officially licensed Call of Duty gameplay and imagery to the table. The Kickstarter is slated to launch in late summer 2023, and a brief teaser was released on the Arcane Wonders YouTube channel:
Fans of the Call of Duty franchise may be a little puzzled about this. The source material is fast-paced and action-packed, which might sound elusive for those who aren’t already hobbyists.
Activision has gambled about how their demographic would respond to something like this. The announcement was naturally followed by a wave of criticism and jokes about current issues for the core video games, like matchmaking.
However, there are countless military board games, and once you actually invest in tabletop gaming, the experiences have more flexibility than you might think. For example, there’s a highly rated Cuphead board game adaptation from 2021 that perfectly emulates the art design of the game, and it maintains the same frantic pacing by adding a timer and desperate dice rolls to every move.
It helps that Call of Duty has thrived on compelling narratives and tactical gameplay, both of which could translate very well. Decision-making and rough results create a natural sense of urgency and tension.
Although many will probably remain skeptical, board games are not just a novelty, and a familiar theme isn’t necessarily a cash grab. Video games are often adapted, with other upcoming titles including The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era and the Dead Cells board game.
Discovering how their themes and concepts are transformed into tactile experiences is a big part of the fun. As long as the spirit of the game feels consistent, a Call of Duty board game has potential.
