Dead Cells: The Rogue-Lite Board Game, is a tabletop adaptation of the “RogueVania” classic from developer and publisher Motion Twin. The board game is headed to Kickstarter soon, and just revealed the first of four Beheaded, “The Poisoned”.

More heroes are expected to be revealed soon, but now fans have a first glimpse at the art design, gear and mechanics. Here’s the full reveal from Montreal game publisher Scorpion Masqué:

Dead Cells originally launched in 2018 to remarkable praise, and it’s one of the most beloved games in any of its genres. Its influences are both meticulously balanced and expanded upon, and the franchise remains as strong as ever. There are new rumors about a Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania PS5 release, and last month saw an incredible mobile update with Everyone is Here Vol 2.

All of the ingenuity in Dead Cells should prove equally impactful in the tabletop scene. It will be an absolute delight to see how the game’s punishing and complex mechanics are translated. But Dead Cells is also an action platformer, and it may prove very difficult to keep up the pace. Still, this is also an opportunity for Dead Cells to continue evolving, which it’s exceptionally good at.

The Poisoned has revealed a lot about what to expect from the board game overall. There’s a beautiful, streamlined art design, which is oddly sleek and sharp compared to the video game. But it does look easy to learn and recognize mid-game.

The Poisoned also showcases how gear and upgrades will work, with multiple hero cards that each seem to have their own path and abilities. While three more Beheaded will be revealed, it’d be nice to see the environment components, since the stages in Dead Cells are so fundamental and iconic.
