Cities: Skylines II, the highly anticipated sequel sim from developer from Colossal Order, has just released another episode of Feature Highlights, this time focusing on maps and themes. Today’s gameplay trailer reveals how Maps and Tiles work, as well as the effects of choosing an American or European theme.

Cities: Skylines II is coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 on October 24th, 2023. You can watch the devs’ seventh episode of Feature Highlights on the game’s YouTube channel:

Cities: Skylines II has revealed a lot of central gameplay features in these feature highlights, from electricity and water management to city services that involve the population more than ever. However, while fans of the genre are probably already sold on the game, these reveals continue to build hype and could help players study all of the elaborate features ahead of launch.

Today’s trailer is much smaller in scope than previous episodes, though it reveals just how expansive maps truly are in this sequel. There are 10 maps in the base game, with a decent selection of real-world inspirations. Map space will be “equivalent to 159 square kilometers”, and players can reach milestones to unlock up to 441 individual tiles on each map, beginning with nine tiles.

This is a drastic improvement to the original game, allowing more variety in the terrain and style. While themes are only divided between American and European influences, the maps are far apart, and the tiles will have different resources and costs.

It’s a very convenient way to let players plan something as cohesive or complex as they want. But it will also present more compelling challenges than before, creating more inspiration and improving replay value.
